Synopsis
This film is based on the real life war experiences of Sergeant-Major Charles Coward. Charlie (Dirk Bogard) is a captive in a Nazi prisoner of war at Stalag 8B. The likeable leader of the prisoners helps morale as the captives engage in sabotage that provides chaos and mayhem for the enemy. The prisoners dig a 280 foot long escape tunnel when not working in the lumber yard. Charlie and his cohorts burn down the lumber yard and convince the German guard he is to blame for the blaze due to careless smoking. He makes a bargain with the worried guard and promises not to report him in exchange for an unescorted trip to Breslau. His mission is to contact members of the Polish underground and provide them with maps, money and the necessary papers to insure their safe passage. The premise of this film spawned the popular television comedy "Hogan's Heroes" a few years later.
