The Magus

This confusing feature finds a British schoolteacher taking a job on a small island in Greece. Nicholas (Michael Caine) replaces a tutor who has committed suicide. He leaves behind his girlfriend Anna (Anna Karina) to accept the position. Nicholas meets Conchis (Anthony Quinn), a wealthy recluse who is either a mystic, a filmmaker, or an ostracized former Nazi collaborator. Equally perplexing is the man's companion Lily (Candice Bergen), who could be a ghost or a paranoid schizophrenic. Anna, a stewardess by trade, flies in to reconcile with Nicholas. She is disturbed by his fascination with the new couple and tearfully leaves for home. Nicholas learns she has later committed suicide and blames Conchis for the event. The man admits he is a psychiatrist and offers to cure Nicholas by allowing him to beat Lily. Nicholas refuses and later awakens to find the villa where the couple had stayed is abandoned and has been for years.
