Synopsis
Robert Wise's drama stars Richard Burton and James Mason as opposing combatants in one of World War II's key battles. It's 1941 and, with his army rampaging across North Africa, Germany's Field Marshall Erwin Rommel (Mason) has ordered the siege of the Libyan port of Tobruk, a place of huge strategic importance to both sides. Australia's 9th Division have been tasked with defending the port for two months and British Captain 'Tammy' MacRoberts (Burton) has been placed in charge of a newly arrived, inexperienced company of Australian troops. But not only does he have to quickly ready his men for action at the front, he must also cope with presence of his former schoolteacher Tom Bartlett (Robert Newton), an alcoholic and a coward. Also starring Robert Douglas, Torin Thatcher and Chips Rafferty.
