1911年，武昌起义成功，辛亥革命席卷全国，推翻了几千年的封建统治，孙中山在南京就任中华民国临时大总统。但北洋军阀袁世凯乘机控制了北京政权，为避免国家分裂，孙中山毅然辞职，让位给袁世凯。袁世凯为制约国民党在议会中的势力，派人暗杀了孙中山的战友宋教仁。孙中山与陈其美发动二次革命，但不幸失败。遭到袁世凯通缉的孙中山再次流亡日本，聚集革命党人策划反袁大计。此时，宋庆龄来到孙中山身边，与他结为夫妻。孙中山就任广州军政府大元帅，兴师北伐。由于陈炯明的背叛，革命再次受挫。在连续挫折面前，孙中山逐渐认识到要推动中国革命，必须实行“联俄，联共，扶助农工”三大政策。在国民党第一次代表大会上，他与李大钊一起亲手缔造了第一次国共合作 。.
