Spirited Away
Synopsis
The start of an extensive season of films from film-maker Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, including new films to the channel Spirited way and Howl's Moving Castle. This latest Studio Ghibli Season features almost the entire canon, with the exception of one title. The season lasts the length of the Easter holiday, with extra titles on Thursdays in the 11am slot. The films will be shown in English language versions, except where noted. There are eighteen films in all, with a few key titles repeated, giving viewers an even better chance of catching them all. The season kicks off with this Oscar-winning animated fantasy adventure from the Studio Ghibli co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki. Ten-year-old Chihiro and her parents are moving home, though - sad at leaving her friends behind - it's not with good grace on her part. Driving through the woods, they realise they must have taken a wrong turn when the road peters out in a dead end. Hungry, they get out of the car and walk down a mysterious alleyway, which emerges into what her father imagines is a theme park, though it's eerily uninhabited. Exploring, they find empty restaurants, where Chihiro's parents greedily sate their hunger, and the girl discovers a boy called Haku, who warns her to get away before dark. But it's too late. Dusk closes in and the trail magically becomes an impassable lake. Far worse, her parents have been transformed into pigs. The 'theme park' is in fact an otherworldly kingdom reserved for gods, where humans are tolerated only if they gladly labour for the deities. But to do so they must sell their human name to the witch who runs the place. Haku is one such indentured worker. Can he help Chihiro to escape? And can her parents' porcine appearance be reversed? Well, perhaps, but there are many bizarre creatures in this world - and not all of them are friendly.
