Movie
Spirit Doctors
Synopsis
The work of three Mexican-American folk healers is shown in Spirit Doctors, as they tend to a variety of patients. One is a partera, or midwife, and her workload is heavy due to the large segment of the population that still prefers to have childbirth at home. Another professes to utilize the powers of a dead healer, whose skill made him the most revered in the country. The third is a curandera, who uses many elements in her treatments, including herbs, cleansings, and communion with spirits. Filmmaker Monica Delgado brings an intimate perspective to her program, having been the recipient of some of these services.
