심마니 나온보 일가는 가난하지만 행복한 생활을 이어간다. 어느날 나온보는 깊은 산중에서 산삼을 발견하여 벼락부자가 되어 인생을 향유할 설계를 한다. 그러나 동네의 모든 사람들이 나온보의 산삼을 탐내기 시작한다. 건재약국의 강주사는 싼값으로 산삼을 빼앗으려는 흉계를 꾸미나 이를 눈치 챈 온보는 가족을 데리고 산속으로 도망간다. 산삼을 빼앗으려는 무리들이 산속을 뒤질 때, 온보의 아들 태배는 죽고 믿었던 천서방에게 산삼을 빼앗긴다. 천서방의 뒤를 따르는 수많은 사람들, 산삼도 자식도 잃어버린 나온보 그는 허탈감에 빠져 든다.
