Shree 420

A classic morality tale inspired by Frank Capra, Shree 420 is the story of a small-town man, Raju, who comes to make it big in the city, where he is almost instantly relieved of all his possessions. Homeless and penniless, Raju is taken in by Ganga Mai, who looks after him. Soon, he meets Vidya and the two fall in love. As he struggles to make ends meet in an ill- paid laundry job, he meets Maya, who introduces him to the world of fast money and crooked, unscrupulous capitalists. As he sinks deeper into this world, his relationship with Vidya suffers and Raju must choose between his sense of values and the temptation and lure of an easy life. Made in the early days of India's independence, Shree 420 tackles many social themes and is a classic example of the hugely popular entertainment-with-a-message genre of the time.
