George, a successful but shallow hairdresser, pursues women ceaselessly and without feeling. His cureent affairs include Jill, who really loves him, and a customer Felicia Karpf - among others. Felicia encourages George to ask her husband Lester to invest in the shop he wants to open. Under the impression George prefers men to women, Lester decides he will make a safe escort for his mistress Jackie for a big party that evening. Jacki happens to be one of George's former girlfriends. George's intricate web of deceptions collapses when Jill and Lester discover him and Jackie making love at the party. Jill ends their affair and Lester hires men to beat him up. Sobered by news of a friend's tragedy, George asks Jackie to marry him, but he is too late, she has already promised to marry Lester. As they drive off, he feels very much alone.
