Synopsis

Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson and André Benjamin star in Kent Alterman's sports comedy. Jackie Moon is a musician whose sole chart success earns him enough to buy a professional basketball team. It's 1976 and Moon's team, the Tropics, plays in the American Basketball Association, which is about to merge with the National Basketball Association. But only four teams from the ABA will survive the merger, and Moon is determined not to be left owning a defunct team. As well as earning enough points, they also have to attract at least 2000 fans to each home game, so Moon stages a series of desperate publicity stunts, from the astute to the gloriously insane (and, while this is a loose retelling of the ABA/NBA story, some of these stunts actually happened). Can Moon, his back-from-retirement signing Monix and self-centred but promising youngster Clarence ensure the Tropics' survival?, The American Basketball Association is on the verge of collapse, and when a former NBA benchwarmer returns to his hometown of Flint, MI, to whip his former team into shape for the playoffs, redemption is just a free throw away in this period sports comedy starring Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson. Penned by Old School scribe Scot Armstrong, Semi-Pro tells the tale of a 1970s-era basketball player who doesn't have much luck in the NBA, but vows to leave his mark on the sport by coaching the Flint Tropics. When the upstart ABA league agrees to be absorbed by the NBA, only four teams will be allowed in. Jackie Moon (Ferrell) must orchestrate a successful season both on the court, and financially off the court with the help of many odd promotional events, in order to remain in the sport he loves.
