명나라가 망한 후 유신의 자손들은 새로운 명의 창건을 위해 천지당이라는 지하당을 조직한다. 이들은 우파자와 대결할 군자금으로 쓸 수만량의 황금을 모아 은닉해 놓고 이 은닉 장소를 어린 남녀(해월과 가화)의 몸에 문신으로 새겨 놓았다. 그러나 천지당원은 우파자의 계책에 의해 차례로 암살당하기 시작한다. 그러던 어느 날 우파자는 해월과 가화의 몸에 문신을 새겨놓은 비화에 대해서 듣고 황금을 차지할 기대에 찬다. 반면, 성인이 된 가화는 우파자를 포박, 형장에 매달게 된다.
