(1984) The last of three movies celebrating Anupam Kher. Mahesh Bhatt's award- winning film launched the young actor into the spotlight. As Anupam Kher recalls, it was the chance of a lifetime: "It was my first film. I was 27 and it was one of the greatest roles that could have been given to any newcomer. I had to play a 65-year-old man." Anupam Kher plays the role of B.B. Pradhan, a retired headmaster, who has to confront the tragedy of his only son's death in New York, alongside his grieving wife, Parvati. Without their son's income, the couple decide to rent a room but soon find themselves involved in the troubled affairs of their young guest, Sujata (Soni Razdan), with dangerous and far-reaching consequences. Saaransh is distinguished by a moving restraint in its treatment of personal tragedy as well as by an incredible performance of real maturity and emotional depth from the young Anupam Kher.
