River's End
Synopsis
River's End is adapted from one of the many Northwoods stories churned out by James Oliver Curwood. Charles Bickford shines in the dual role of Royal Canadian Mountie sergeant Callahan and accused murderer John Keith. Blowing a chance for escape, Keith rescues Callahan from a blinding blizzard. When Callahan dies anyway, Keith assumes the Mountie's identity and in this guise falls in love with Miriam (Evalyn Knapp), the daughter of RCMP commandant McDowell (David Torrence). Things get hairy when it turns out that the late Sgt. Callahan was married to a woman residing in England. On the verge of confessing all to save Miriam's reputation, Keith is cleared of the murder charge, and all's right with the world. The best scenes involve Callahan's young pal Mickey (Junior Coghlan), who may or may not see through Keith's masquerade.
