Radiophobia
Synopsis
The name Chernobyl will doubtless register with anyone who lived through that ghastly calamity; Pripyat stands, even decades later, as one of the grisliest side effects of the infamous nuclear spill. A "model city of the future" designed by the Soviets, inhabited between 1970 and 1986, and extremely proximate to Chernobyl, Pripyat housed over 50,000 residents when the cataclysm struck; tragically, many were not evacuated until several days after the spill. Julio Soto's documentary Radiophobia observes former Pripyat residents revisiting the ill-fated community 20 years later, and coming face to face with an altogether abandoned city -- a ghost town, with deadly echoes of disaster and dark, foreboding hints of the radioactive fallout that, ironically, may only increase with the passage of time.
