明朝萬曆年間，湖南湘潭窮書生劉劍平，偶得刑部尙書嚴輝賞識並認爲半子，期待功名成就與女秀屏完婚。_x000D_ 劍平一舉狀元及第，賜官爲湖廣按察使，赴任途中遇漁夫張帆擋路喊冤，遭控之人乃嚴輝獨子，劍平妻舅－－嚴白駒。經查明：白駒騙得漁家江氏母女過府賣鱼，逼迫江母立下婚書將女妻之，江母因女已與張帆定婚而予拒絶，白駒爲得婚書踢死江母，埋屍花園古杏樹下，江女則由白駒之妹秀屏留閨中保護。_x000D_ 劍平捨國法就親情，徇私曲判，做個表面青天，杖責白駒四十大棍，江女歸還張帆，並貧三十兩銀，促結秦晉。_x000D_ 一日，劍平設宴勸導白駒，白駒疑劍平預設陷阱，趁機推落劍平於湖中，所幸爲張帆夫婦救起，劍平愈覺慚愧不安。劍平遂微服入京稟告岳父，卻無心釀成按察使失蹤一案，都御史陸大人請旨查辦，嚴輝也請旨回鄉欲懲辦白駒，陸御史探悉一切，因其女婿亦作惡涉案，遂大力爲白駒求情，以圖兩相遮掩，兩全其美。怎奈人命關天，嚴輝大義滅親，揮淚斬子，劍平失職亦受嚴懲。.
