По одноименной повести Аркадия Гайдара. К населённому пункту приближаются белые войска. Небольшой гарнизон красноармейцев решает эвакуировать мирных жителей и раненого бойца в безопасное место. Это ответственное дело поручается молодому комсомольцу Ефимке. Подводы выезжают из села и едут по лесным дорогам, но сбиваются с пути. Ночью на привале Ефимка, его мать и Верка говорят о будущем, о доме в сорок этажей с башней, звездой и прожектором - пусть светит!.. Ефимка решает пробраться к отряду красноармейцев. В лесу он наталкивается на белых, в перестрелке убивает белого офицера. И когда на беженцев нападают белые, появляется красный отряд. Его привёл Ефимка.
