Synopsis
Directed by Mike Nichols (The Graduate; Working Girl), this comedy-drama is a screen adaption, by actress Carrie Fisher, of her own best-selling, semi-autobiographical novel. Meryl Streep stars as Suzanne Vale, a moderately famous Hollywood actress struggling to rebuild her life and career after a drug overdose lands her in rehab. Once out, however, she finds that the only way she can be hired for another film is if a 'responsible party' is looking out for her over the duration of the shoot, meaning that Suzanne must move back in with her alcoholic mother, ex-movie star Doris Mann (Shirley MacLaine). The pair are forced back into close quarters when Suzanne moves into Doris' Beverly Hills house, the highs and lows of their turbulent relationship becoming increasingly pronounced. This dark but ultimately affectionate look at Hollywood and the characters and neuroses which it breeds is full of wonderful supporting performances: Dennis Quaid as a predatory producer, Gene Hackman as an over-bearing but caring director, Annette Bening as a promiscuous actress who teaches Suzanne a valuable lesson and Richard Dreyfuss as the romantic doctor who sends flowers and pumps stomachs.
