Movie
Oxhide II
Synopsis
Chinese writer and director Liu Jia Yin returns to the style and themes of her acclaimed debut feature in this minimalist drama. Shot in a small apartment which is home to Liu Jia Yin's parents Jia Hui Fen and Liu Zai Ping, Oxhide II was filmed using a battery of small video cameras placed in fixed positions which were not moved during the course of the shoot. As the story plays out in real time, the shots (some as long as 21 minutes) are composed without the actors in mind, as they play with little regard to their presence in the frame. Over the course of two and a quarter hours, Jia Hui Fen and Liu Zai Ping quit work for the day, clear the table of their tools and materials for making purses, and prepare a batch of dumplings for dinner. As the couple cooks and eats their evening meal, Liu Jia Yin joins them and the three have a lively discussion of the ups and downs of the family business. Oxhide II was an official selection at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
