Movie
Oliver!
Synopsis
This is one of the truly great 1960s British musicals. It takes Dickens' masterpiece about an orphan boy struggling to survive on this own in London, adds some wonderful songs courtesy of Lionel Bart, and turns it into a cinematic gem. Few who've seen this film can forget Ron Moody as Fagin teaching his apprentices how to: pick a pocket or two. or Mark Lester's Oliver asking for more. Adding music takes a British literary classic and makes it accessible and enjoyable for those who might not choose to read the book. But it doesn't trivialise the story - viewers are still terrified by Bill Sykes (Oliver Reed, in what many think is one of his best performances), entertained by the streetwise pickpocket The Artful Dodger (Jack Wild) and fearful for the vulnerable Oliver. Great entertainment, as fresh today as it was on its release more than 35 years ago.
