Λίγο μετά την επανάσταση του 1821, κάπου στην επαναστατημένη Ελλάδα, ο Λιάκος Μπουρνόβας (Γιάννης Βόγλης) θέλει να παντρευτεί τη Φωτεινή (Αλεξάνδρα Λαδικού), αδελφή του ισχυρού Παναγή Νοταρά (Πέτρος Φυσσούν). Ο Νοταράς, με τη σειρά του, θέλει την αδερφή του Λιάκου. Όταν η Φωτεινή αιχμαλωτίζεται απ’ τον ληστή καπεταν-Αρβανίτη (Δημήτρης Ιωακειμίδης), ο Λιάκος την απελευθερώνει. Η περηφάνια του τον κάνει να αρνηθεί την αμοιβή που του προσφέρει ο Νοταράς. Ο Νοταράς, εξίσου περήφανος, στέλνει έναν από τους υφισταμένους του να ζητήσει σε γάμο την αδερφή του Λιάκου. Εκείνη αυτοκτονεί και ο Λιάκος ορκίζεται εκδίκηση. Στη σύγκρουση, ο Νοταράς τραυματίζεται και προτού ξεψυχήσει παραδέχεται την αγάπη του για την αδερφή του Λιάκου, επιτρέποντάς του να παντρευτεί τη Φωτεινή.
