Povestea se petrece după ce pădurarul Culi trece printr-o dramă veritabilă: îi moare soția , iar acesta este extrem de afectat de acest eveniment tragic. Suferința acestuia este amplificată și de singurătatea în care se găsește, în mijlocul naturii, intrând în stări puternice de frământare și de melancolie. Crezând că suferă de farmece, Culi merge la o vrăjitoare care nu face mare lucru pentru el. Salvarea pare să vină de la un înțelept care îi spune că suferă de boala ochiului de urs, denumire data pentru posesiunea diavolului, iar lucrurile ar trebui să se îndrepte prin multe rugăciuni și citire de psalmi.
