Dlouhometrážní debut Věry Chytilové je konfrontací osudů dvou žen, z nichž jedna žije pro rodinu a druhá pro výkonnostní sport. Gymnastka Eva Bosáková, díky jejímuž obsazení vyvolává smyšlený příběh dojem dokumentu, po léta obětuje své soukromí dosažení vrcholného sportovního výkonu a těší se, že si jednou vše vynahradí. Naopak Věra, která se dosud soustředila na rodinu a domácnost, je zase nespokojená pro nedostatek seberealizace. Obě ženy si stejně jako hrdinka Stropu kladou otázku po smyslu života, ukazuje se však, že ve chvíli, kdy by mohly realizovat svůj sen "o něčem jiném", se dobrovolně vracejí k dosavadnímu způsobu života, protože začínají tušit, že právě tam je jejich místo...
