S humorem, satirickou příchutí i s nádechem nostalgie líčí tato hořká komedie peripetie malého divadelního souboru (Divadla starých forem), který má sice úspěch u publika, ale zároveň i stálé potíže s nadřízenými orgány. Zachycuje usídlování divadla na nové "štaci" v nevyhovujícím sále periferního kulturního domu, průběh zkoušek nové hry i její premiéru, ale také epizody ze zákulisí. Značný prostor tu mají ukázky z her repertoáru Divadla Járy Cimrmana (Němý Bobeš, Akt, Dlouhý, Široký a Krátkozraký, Dobytí Severního pólu, Cimrman v říši hudby, Vizionář), ačkoli tu jméno fiktivního slavného génia ani jednou nepadne. Film vychází ze skutečných situací, není v něm (kromě her) nic vymyšleného. Odehrává se celý v prostorách kulturního domu a jeho těsném okolí. Hlavném dějištěm je pak stísněné zákulisí, kam ovšem doléhají i ozvuky všedních starostí protagonistů.
