Synopsis
Meryl Streep teams up with Titanic heart-throb Leonardo DiCaprio for this heartbreaking comedy-drama about a broken family. Estranged since their father's first stroke many years earlier, sisters Lee and Bessie now lead very different lives in separate states. Bessie, a spinster, has devoted her life to nursing her ailing father and caring for her dowdy aunt. By contrast, Lee is a selfish single parent with a lousy attitude and two mixed-up sons to show for it: teenager Hank is institutionalised after a deliberate attempt to burn his mother's house down and the wilfully invisible Charlie isn't much better. When Bessie's doctor informs her that she has leukaemia, she contacts her sister in the hope of finding a compatible bone marrow donor to save her life. After 20 years the sisters are reunited by anxiety and heartache at the home of their dying father Marvin. Hank is released from his asylum for a week to be tested as a possible donor for Bessie, the aunt he didn't know existed! As he and Bessie develop an unexpectedly sympathetic relationship, Lee and Bessie get to know each other all over again and rediscover the true meaning of family.
