"Die Senegalesin Safi Faye ist in der Arbeit mit Jean Rouch zum Filmemachen gekommen. Nach einem Ethnologie-Studium in Paris behandelten ihre ersten Filme das Leben bäuerlicher Gemeinschaften im Senegal. 1979 kam Faye für einen Video-Workshop an die Freie Universität Berlin und blieb anschließend mit einem DAAD-Stipendium in der Stadt. In dieser Zeit entstand der vom ZDF produzierte Spielfilm Man sa yay, der das Leben eines senegalesischen Studenten in Berlin schildert. Die regelmäßigen Briefe seiner Mutter lindern seine Entfremdung nur oberflächlich, denn sie konfrontieren ihn auch mit Erwartungen seiner Familie in Senegal, die er kaum wird erfüllen können.".
