Synopsis
Tom Luckey was an artist and designer who made a living creating unique environments for people's homes, such as staircases that could turn into slides or living rooms made entirely of upholstered objects that eliminated the need for conventional furniture. Tom was working on a three story high climbable sculpture for kids when an accident left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. Even though he was confined to a wheelchair for life, Tom was determined to finish the project, and turned to his son Spencer for help. As a successful architect, Spencer had the knowledge and skills to make Tom's design a reality, but while Spencer was willing to help his dad, there had been emotional obstacles between them ever since Tom divorced Spencer's mother and remarried when his son was young. In addition, Tom is largely dependent on his current wife Ettie for many of his day-to-day needs, but Spencer isn't comfortable with the woman he believes replaced his mother in Tom's life. Filmmaker Laura Longsworth chronicled Tom Luckey's struggle to complete his giant sculpture and renew his relationship with his son, and Luckey is a documentary that captures the joys and trials of his mission on film, Luckey was an official selection at the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival.
