Luck by Chance

(2009) Luck by Chance , the fourth film in Bollywood's New Voices season, is introduced by director Zoya Akhtar, who is the ultimate insider, born into a family of writers, directors and actors, including her brother Farhan Akhtar, the star and producer of the film. It is a story that is played out every day: Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) leaves his home in Delhi to become a movie star in Mumbai. There he meets Sona (Konkona Sensharma), who has been attempting to make it big for years, and with her help starts to climb the long and treacherous ladder to success. Meanwhile, ageing producer Romy Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) has his own struggles keeping his production afloat while bearing up against the corporatisation of the Hindi film industry and trying to balance actors' tantrums and financiers' demands. Packed with star cameos, sumptuous dance sequences, and dollops of emotion, Luck by Chance chronicles the machinations of the biggest film industry in the world: from the outlandish demands of top stars to the struggles of those trying to get a foot in the door, from superstitious rituals rampant in Bollywood to Sona's ultimate realisation that success takes precedence over friendship and love.
