Debrecen, az 1890-es évek. Nyilas Misi, a kollégium eminens diákja pakkot kap hazulról. Fel se bontja, rohan a vak Pósalaky úrhoz felolvasni az újságot, majd megteszi a lutrin az öreg által megálmodott számokat. Társai időközben megdézsmálják a pakkot, de Misit csak szegény édesanyja levele érdekli. Misi újabb munkát kap: Doroghyék fiát kell tanítania. Doroghy Bellának Török úr udvarol és Misi segít nekik levelezni. A lutrin kihúzzák a megálmodott számokat, csakhogy a fiú elveszítette a reskontót. A cédulát Török találta meg, aki megszökteti Bellát. Doroghy és Pósalaky is panaszt tesz Misire, aki a rosszindulatú bizottság előtt hiába védekezik. Végül kiderül az igazság, de Misi már nem akar többé debreceni diák lenni.
