Movie
Le Havre
Synopsis
The Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki relocates himself to France for this moving deadpan comedy-drama, which explores immigration and intergenerational friendship. Marcel Marx lives in a down-at-heel but community-minded working-class suburb of the titular northern French port. The ageing man scrapes by by shining shoes, living frugally with his wife Arletty in their small flat and socialising in a low-key manner with his neighbours in the local bar. But two events are about to disturb Marcel's routine: the arrival of a young boy and the fear of the loss of his wife. The boy, Idrissa, is on the run from the authorities, having pitched up in Le Havre as one of a shipping container-load of African immigrants. The two quickly bond and Marcel ventures into the immigrant community to see if he can reunite the child with a relative who's already living in Europe. But, while he's doing this, Arletty is taken ill, and things don't look good for her. To complicate matters further, the detective Monet seems to have caught scent of what Marcel is up to. In French with English subtitles.
