Hrdinou je líný krejčovský tovaryš Labakan, který sní o životě v přepychu a oblékne se do přepychových šatů pro bohatého emíra a když vidí jak uctivě jej lidé na tržnici zdraví využije příležitosti, která se mu nečekaně naskytne. Seznámí se totiž se sultánovým synem Omarem, který vyrůstal u vznešeného káhisrského paši a nyní se vrací domů. Labakan mu ukradne poznávací znamení, sultánovu dýku, a vydává se za něj. Sultánova žena však pozná svého pravého syna a přiměje sultána, aby oba muže podrobil zkoušce. Oba mají dokázat svou zručnost ušitím korunovačních šatů, což se samozřejmě povede jen skutečnému krejčíkovi Labakanovi a tak ho čeká kat. Naštěstí to vše byl jen sen a pošetilý mladík se ještě včas napraví.
