Eva, schovanka ze mlýna, se seznámí se statkářem Štěpánem Potockým, k jehož rodu se váže kletba, která v několika předchozích generacích způsobila bratrovražedné spory o ženy. Eva je moudrá a statečná dívka a rozhodne se přijmout Štěpánovu nabídku ke sňatku a zlomit dávné prokletí.
