Kdesi v Zapovězeném lese žije zlý čaroděj Kruciatus. Ten se před sto lety pokusil zničit království, kterému dnes vládne král Alexandr, jenž má dva syny – následníka trůnu Jana a mladšího prince Karla. Karel se však nechce s rolí druhého v pořadí za žádnou cenu smířit. S pomocí svého sluhy Pakosty se na hradě vloupá do zakázané komnaty, získá kouzelné rekvizity, které tu po zlém čaroději zůstaly, a hodlá svého bratra zničit. Princ Jan tak vypije kouzelný lektvar, který mu jeho povedený bratr naservíruje, a ten mu v mžiku vymaže paměť. Jan se poté bezhlavě vydává na cestu do Zapovězeného lesa, ve kterém každý, kdo tam kdy vkročil, beze stopy zmizel. Od tohoto okamžiku se začíná odvíjet řetězec dramatických, ale především často komických situací.
