Ačkoli byl film natočen již v roce 1960, jeho příběh jakoby byl vystřižen přímo ze žhavé současnosti. Vše začíná v okamžiku, kdy je zjištěno, že řada lidí se srdeční chorobou zemřela, neboť místo léčby doporučované lékaři užívali "švýcarský" lék Cordofilin. Netušili totiž, že v tubách je obyčejný B-komplex. Pátrání po těch, kdo pro svůj zisk neštítili zneužít ani nemocné a tím je vlastně zabíjet, vede kapitán Tůma se svým pomocníkem poručíkem Líbalem. První stopa vede k magistru Jelínkovi, který však unikne zatčení sebevraždou. Také další z podezřelých, zloděj Josef Šesták policii unikne. Jeho stopa vede do Karlových Varů a tam se také oba kriminalisté vydají, aby pokračovali v pátrání. Okruh podezřelých se rozšiřuje, ale všichni mají alibi. Před kriminalisty stojí nelehký úkol, zjistit, které z těch alibi kryje pachatele...(oficiální text distributora).
