How Long Is “June Night”?

In this drama, a village girl attempts to extricate herself from a destructive relationship with a wayfaring sailor. The sailor does not want to break up, pulls out a pistol and threatens to shoot himself. During the row, the gun is accidentally discharged and a bullet lodges dangerously close to the woman's heart precipitating hours of surgery. Finally she is saved, and the sailor is tried for attempted homicide. She intervenes and corroborates his story, and he is given a reduced sentence. She is then driven out of town by her neighbors, appalled by the whole squalid affair. She ends up changing her name, moving to Stockholm, and marrying a stable young man. At last, she begins leading a happy life.
