How Long Is “Jogan”?

Kidar Sharma directs this melodrama about a beautiful female ascetic named Surabhi (Nargis) who begs for alms. While singing "Ghunghat ke pat khole re" (which was actually sung by Geeta Dutt) -- a famous song written by India's most famous female mendicant, 16th century saint Meerabai -- Shurabhi attracts the attention of handsome young agnostic Vijay (Dilip Kumar). Though she begs him to stay away, he continues to follow her until she eventually tells him why she became a nun. Born into a family with a good-for-nothing father and an alcoholic, abusive brother, Shurabhi ran away from home rather than submit to an arranged marriage to an old man. Yet instead of killing herself, as was her original plan, she renounced the world and became of the impoverished and the devout. She asks Vijay to not follow her beyond a certain tree, which he agrees to do. Later, another mendicant gives him a book from Shurabhi after she dies.
