Movie
Igby Goes Down
Synopsis
Igby Slocomb (Kieran Culkin) is a 17-year-old boy from a wealthy and privileged family, but that's not to say he's the product of a happy or stable home. His father Jason Slocomb (Bill Pullman) has been in an asylum for years, while Igby's mother Mimi (Susan Sarandon) is a cold, edgy woman who has a problem with amphetamines. Igby's older brother Oliver (Ryan Phillippe) is a smirking yuppie-in-training who has little good to say about his sibling. As a result, Igby has grown up as a rebel, but he doesn't appear to have a natural talent for rebellion, and his conflicts with his family thus far have landed him in a New Jersey military academy he hates. One day, Igby runs away from school, ending up in Manhattan, where he appears on the doorstep of Rachel, a dancer who is the mistriss of Igby's Godfather D.H. (Jeff Goldblum). Soon Igby finds himself infatuated with the statuesque Rachel, while getting to know her curious friend Russell (Jared Harris), a performance artist.Igby eventually becomes involved with Sookie (Claire Danes), a twenty year old former Bennington student. Eventually D.H. learns that he is crashing with Rachel, and Igby is called home when his mother develops cancer. Igby Goes Down was the first feature film from writer and director Burr Steers.
