Episode Guide
Norman Conquest Of Pembrokeshire
Series: Walking Through History
Synopsis
Tony Robinson visits the south-west corner of Wales and one of the finest coastal paths in the country. But he's not going just to appreciate the beauty of the bays, beaches and wildlife. He's out to discover why Pembrokeshire feels so English, even though it's over 100 miles from the border. The clue's in the county's other claim to fame: there are castles everywhere and it boasts one of the country's finest cathedrals, sure signs that the Normans stamped their mark all over this little slice of Wales. Tony's four-day walk traces the story of the Norman conquest of Pembrokeshire, which he discovers was very different from the knockout victory of Hastings. There was a long, fiercely fought struggle before the Normans turned this Welsh-speaking kingdom into 'Little England beyond Wales'.
