Synopsis
Dr David Starkey presents a complete history of the British monarchy, combining a gripping biographical narrative of England's royal rulers with a thought-provoking, original and intelligent analysis of the gradual emergence of a unique form of government: a constitutional monarchy that would eventually allow the inhabitants of the British Isles an almost unrivalled degree of political liberty and stability. Although less well-remembered than the Norman conquest of 1066, the Dutch invasion of 1688, led by another William, had consequences just as momentous. The reign of Charles II had left the religious and constitutional divides of the Civil War unresolved. When his Catholic brother James II succeeded him, the old wounds opened again. James's mishandled attempts to promote toleration for Catholics led to fears of a rebirth of rule by royal tyranny. Outraged, Parliament acted to invite James's Dutch son-in-law William of Orange to invade and 'restore Parliamentary rights'. Would England resort to regicide only half a century after the execution of Charles I? Starkey tells the gripping story of the English revolution of 1688, which was very different to that of the 1640s. Replacing one King with his own nephew, Parliament fashioned a largely peaceful settlement that markedly curtailed royal power. The result was the formation of our constitutional monarchy, and the foundation of a system of government that underpinned Britain's rise to greatness and made her the world's first modern state.
