主人公曹東生年幼時，母親被父親失手殺害，藏屍於臥室的牆中，曹父對曹東生隱瞞，說母親離家出走，這給年幼的曹東生造成強烈的打擊，並在內心種下了對異性保持懷疑的種子。曹東生對原本青梅竹馬的舒慧態度有了180度的轉變，從原先的惺惺相惜變得疏遠，直至絕情，結果使得舒慧鬱鬱而終。在戀愛方面，曹東生也無法進入正常的狀態，對女友蔣玲百般苛責。在散盡家財也無法留住身患癌症的父親的生命之後，曹東生選擇了和蔣玲分手。在帶著父親的骨灰回到老家安葬的路上，曹東生髮生車禍。在昏迷中，曹東生的靈魂回到了家，他並不知道自己已經死了。在“舒慧”的指引下，發現了母親被殺的事實。從而解開了心結，“舒慧”原諒了他。在死亡線上掙扎許久的曹東生在醫院蘇醒，第一眼便看見了守護在自己身邊的女友蔣玲。.
