Do nápravného zařízení pro mladistvé přichází mladý kněz Herbert, aby zde vykonával pastoraci. Herbert se od samého počátku střetává s neprostupnou komunikační bariérou. Oporu nenachází ani ve vychovatelském sboru, jehož šedivou eminencí je zástupce ředitelky přezdívaný Šéfík. Tento muž je bývalým boxerem a tento sport provozuje také v ústavu. Svěřenci, pokud chtějí mít u Šéfíka nějaké výhody, musí boxovat. K tréninkům patří také zápasy, kde se často nechává volný průběh agresivitě mladých delikventů. Herbert pochopí, že má-li hlouběji proniknout do života ústavu, musí přijmout zdejší pravidla. Přesvědčí Šéfíka, aby jej postavil do zápasu, a ten mu schválně vybere nebezpečného protivníka.
