日本・トルコ合作映画。壮大なスケールで贈る真実の物語。映画は二つのエピソードで構成。１８９０年、和歌山県串本町沖。トルコの親善使節団を乗せた軍艦エルトゥールル号が座礁して大破、海に投げ出された乗組員５００名以上が暴風雨で命を落とす。そうした過酷な状況下で、地元住民が懸命の救援活動に乗り出す。それから時を経たイラン・イラク戦争中の１９８５年、日本政府は危機的状況を理由にイラン在留邦人の救出を断念。そんな中、トルコ政府は彼らのためにある行動を取る。国境を越えた真の友情を描く感動作。第３９回日本アカデミー賞において、優秀作品賞と優秀監督賞をはじめとする１０部門で優秀賞を受賞。美術と録音部門は最優秀賞を獲得。.
