영화의 배경은 한국 전쟁이 막바지로 치닫던 1952년. 휴전 회담이 한창 진행되고 있을 무렵, 미정보국은 북한측에서 세균전을 준비하고 있다는 사실을 알아낸다. 몇 번의 특공대를 투입했지만 실패한 미국은 이 작전 수행의 적임으로 불사조 같은 해병 1중대의 생존 대원들을 지목하고, 그들에게 특수훈련을 시켜 적지에 잠입시킨다. 산 속에 잠입한 해병대원들은 산 속에서 유격훈련을 하며 탈출을 기도하고 있는 사람들을 만나게 된다. 그들에게서 자유의 소중함을 깨달은 특공대원들은 자신들의 임무에 강렬한 긍지를 찾게 된다.
