Barbara Stanwyck stars in Frank Capra's melodrama as Lulu Smith, a humble librarian who falls in love with District Attorney Bob Grover. His wife is an invalid and he won't leave her but the two have an affair until Lulu falls pregnant. She enters into a marriage of convenience with Al Holland, but when he threatens to expose Grover, she kills him and is jailed. When Grover becomes governor, he pardons her and, on his deathbed, leaves her and their daughter half his estate. But a noble Lulu refuses, preferring instead unsullied private memories.
