Liduška, neteř bohaté máselnice Mastílkové, se zaslíbila Jeníkovi, synu ševce Kroutila, ale její teta naléhá, aby se provdala za šviháka von Dudka. Dívka přesto napíše Dudkovi dopis na rozloučenou a dá jej tetě, která však psaní předá Jeníkovi. Mladík nabude dojmu, že ztratil svou lásku, a trápí se. Situaci se pokusí využít zpěvačka Cibulčíni, aby získala Jeníka pro sebe. Nešťastná Liduška přijímá ze vzdoru Dudkovo dvoření. V neděli se koná slavnost, zvaná Fidlovačka, na níž má dostaveníčko celá Praha. Dudek se tady posmívá české písni a vybízí kapelu, aby zahrála něco německého. Starý Kroutil odsoudí jeho chování a rozhorlí se nad nedostatkem národní hrdosti mnohých Čechů. Do toho slepý hudebník Mareš zanotuje "Kde domov můj" a dojme všechny kolem...
