1927年继“四一二”事变以后，五月“马日事变”发生，湖南长沙大批共产党员被害，国共合作到了最危急的时刻。为此毛泽东、周恩来、瞿秋白、李维汉、陈独秀、邓小平等人汇聚武汉商量对策，以期为陷入绝境的中国共产党寻找出路。此时的武汉鱼龙混杂，有貌似公正的汪精卫武汉国民政府、有不谙中国情况的共产国际代表和各路军阀武装，共产党人举步维艰。“七一五”反革命政变，使革命者彻底丢掉了幻想，在经历了一系列斗争之后，在蒋介石、汪精卫先后叛变革命的白色恐怖下，中国共产党人先是在南昌举行了武装暴动，接着在武汉召开了期待已久的紧急会议——八七会议。从而确定了中国共产党武装暴动、开展土地革命的方针，并把领导农民进行秋收起义作为当前党的最主要任务，指明了今后革命斗争的正确方向，特别是毛泽东在会上提出“政权是由枪杆子中取得的”，为挽救党和中国革命做出了巨大贡献，使中国革命掀开了一个新的篇章 。.
