Every Time We Say Goodbye

In this humanistic love story, the setting is 1942, and pilot David (Tom Hanks) is on medical leave in Jerusalem when he meets an attractive woman. Sarah (Cristina Marsillach) is at her best friend's wedding (she is marrying David's squadron leader) when she meets David for the first time. She is a Sephardic Jew from a traditional family, and he is the son of a Protestant preacher; it's not an ideal combination from her family's point of view. At first their cultural differences are comical, as David tries to make his way through a family dinner, but once the family knows that he is more than just a friend of Sarah's, everything changes. They are almost literally pulled apart when Sarah's brothers come to drag her away from David's apartment in order to confront her family, who are in deep agony over her behavior. Given that David has to jet back to the war, their future seems precarious at the very least.
