Er Dong
Synopsis
A restless young man is torn between his independence and his family's pleas that he reform in this neorealistic drama from Chinese filmmaker Yang Jin. Er Dong (Bai Lijun) was orphaned at a young age and lives with his adopted mother in a Christian settlement within a rural province. Er Dong hangs out with a gang of budding delinquents, and his mother is at the end of her rope as he constantly defies authority and finds trouble. When his mother sends him to a Christian school, Er Dong feels angry and out of place and begins fighting with his classmates. Er Dong falls in love with a girl from his school (Yang Mingjuan) and at first he tries to behave for her sake. But they impulsively run away and get married, and when the girl discovers she's pregnant, Er Dong realizes he's not prepared for the responsibilities of fatherhood. Er Dong was an official selection at the 2009 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
