Ellen Harriman, az unatkozó milliomoslány vőlegényét cserbenhagyva követi Velencébe Antonio Grivelli grófot. Az eladósodott fiatalembernek, akinek palotájában mindennapos vendég a végrehajtó, levél útján ajánlanak feleségül egy amerikai milliomoslányt, de eltépi az írást. Ellennek kezébe kerül a levél egyik fele, azt hiszi, hogy róla van szó, s a gróf csak érdekből udvarol neki. Közben megérkezik Ellen apja, James Harrimann. Lányának és leendő vejének megvásárolja a Grivelli palotát. A grófnak mégsem kell kiköltöznie, mert ő veszi nőül Ellent, aki kiengesztelődik, amikor a levél másik feléből megtudja, hogy nem őt ajánlották feleségnek.
