Gárdonyi Géza nagyszabású történelmi regénye kötelező irodalom az általános iskolákban. Ebből a remek regényből készült Várkonyi Zoltán monumentális filmalkotása a kor legnagyobb magyar színészeinek a főszereplésével. 1500-as évek, Magyarország. Portyázó török csapatok dúlják fel az országot, rabolnak, fosztogatnak, rabságba hurcolják a magyarokat. Bornemissza Gergely és Cecey Éva gyerekként kerül Jumurdzsák kezébe, aki egy keleti rabszolgapiacon akarja eladni értékes foglyait. A gyerekek megszöknek, ráadásul magukkal viszik a babonás Jumurdzsák talizmánját. A török harcost ezután elhagyja a szerencséje, míg a bátor kisfiú, Bornemissza Péter megtalálja azt.
