Weil ihr politisches Engagement für eine bessere Welt nicht den gewünschten Erfolg bringt, schafft sich Edith Baumeister (Angela Winkler) in ihrem Tagebuch ein Ersatzleben. Doch die Harmonie, die sie in ihrem Tagebuch beschreibt, hat mit der Realität wenig zu tun. Ihr Mann Paul (Vadim Glowna) verlässt sie für eine andere, ihr Sohn Chris (Leopold von Verschuer) verfällt dem Alkohol und der kränkliche Onkel Georg, der mit im Haus lebt, wird für immer ein Pflegefall bleiben. Mehr und mehr zieht sich Edith in die heile Fantasiewelt ihres Tagebuchs zurück. Als sie diese mehr und mehr mit der Wirklichkeit verwechselt, droht ihr die Zwangseinweisung in eine psychiatrische Klinik.
